AS GOOD AS GELT

Not a creature is stirring this weekend, possums. Almost all the live music venues we know and love are closed tonight and tomorrow, and even Weepin' Willie has the night off. But for some people this night is no different from any other, and those people are prepared to party.

Of course we're talking about the 1,500-plus crowd expected to show up in midriff-baring club clothes, faux fur, and pinstripe suits for the annual Matzo Ball at Avalon. Originally begun as something for young Jewish singles to do while the Christian world is trimming trees and going to church, the crowd is now roughly 20 percent gate-crashing goyim. With a DJ spinning and plenty of good, kosher deli eats for noshing, it's like a bar mitzvah for the 21-to-49-year-old set. At 8 p.m. Tickets $25. 15 Lansdowne St., 617-262-2424.
